Meet Harry’s Animals
Found beside a Maui road as a newborn, Lucy has always known how to make an entrance.
Where her story began
Lucy was born on—or perhaps the day before—the fires devastated Lahaina.
In the aftermath, a young Maui family decided to take their children on a drive to Hāna. They needed to get away for a day, breathe some fresh air and begin processing everything that had happened.
As they traveled through the Kaupō area, a tiny baby goat wandered into the road. Her umbilical cord was still attached, but her mother was nowhere to be found.
The family searched for her mother and tried to determine where she had come from, but they had no luck. They couldn’t leave the little goat alone in the road, so Lucy went home with them.
Lucy had been found—and she had found her first family.
Her first family
For the next two years, Lucy was part of their family and loved her life with them. As she grew older—and considerably more rambunctious—she began living outside.
She still loved every moment the family spent playing with her, but those moments gradually became less frequent, and Lucy’s life became lonelier.
Then the family needed to travel to the mainland for an extended period. They needed a safe place for Lucy to stay while they were gone.
Lucy makes an entrance
Lucy arrived on the Fourth of July—just two hours before the fireworks began. Between introducing her to a strange new place, keeping everyone calm and dealing with the noise outside, it was a crazy night. Taking photographs was the last thing on my mind.
The first videos I have of Lucy were taken the following morning, July 5. They show her beginning to explore her temporary home and trying to understand where she had landed.

What was supposed to be a two-month stay eventually became a permanent rehoming, and I couldn’t have been happier.
Making herself at home
Lucy settled into the rhythms of life here quickly. She found comfortable places to rest, plenty of space to explore and, most importantly, other animals who understood her.
Lucy today
Today, Lucy spends her days playing with Theodorable the Great and Heidi. She has companionship, room to explore and a family of animals around her.
She also enjoys going a round or two with Blu whenever the mood strikes.
